Good morning (almost afternoon), FAM! Start your week off right with some political action:
Local. As I type this post, some folks from the FAM federal group are meeting with Jack Bergman’s staff for Monday office hours. We look forward to hearing about how the meeting went! The Calumet office hours are from 1:30 – 3:30 today (340 6th St. Calumet), so if you are able to attend, please do.
Federal (via Michigan Resistance, Houghton/Keweenaw FAM FB). Today and all this week, continue to call Representative Bergman to urge him to oppose the ACA repeal plan, a plan he voted to advance in the House Budget Committee. A contributer to the FAM FB page suggested the following talking point:
“Here in Michigan, a bipartisan group (which included one of the next candidates for governor, Gretchen Whitmer) worked to implement our particular state version of Medicaid. As such, even our GOP governor (with whom many have other issues) recognizes that repeal of, rather than fixing the Affordable Care Act (aka Obamacare), would be a bad move. Rep. Bergman likes to tout his leadership of bipartisanship. This might be a good way to hold him tothat standard.”

It sounds like his federal office is taking calls: 202-225-4735

Federal (via Daily Action). “This week, we have set the ambitious goal of making 100,000 calls to the Senate to oppose Neil Gorsuch’s nomination to the Supreme Court. In the days ahead, we’ll focus on specific reasons why our senators should reject Trump’s extremist Supreme Court nominee: his anti-choice record; his position on torture as a Bush appointee in the Department of Justice; his tendency, shared by many in his party, to favor corporations over people; his relative lack of experience.

But the goal of our calls today is simply to remind our senators that Gorsuch shouldn’t be having a hearing in the first place. This is a stolen Supreme Court seat, and any Democrat who enters these hearings with a conciliatory approach is rewarding Republican obstructionism.

These hearings should’ve been for President Obama’s nominee, Merrick Garland, and Democrats shouldn’t gloss over that, not for one minute. If your Senator is a Republican, simply remind them that you haven’t forgotten the unprecedented sleaziness of their Majority Leader’s power play after the death of Scalia more than 13 months ago.”

Senator Stebenow: 202-224-4822
Senator Peters: 202-224-6211

Here is a sample script you can use: “Hello. My name is (NAME), I am US Citizen living in (STATE), and my zip code is (ZIP). I am calling to urge you to oppose Trump’s SCOTUS nominee Judge Neil Gorsuch. President Trump has proven that he wants a Judiciary that will allow him and his party to act with impunity and against the interests of the American people.

A Supreme Court’s Justice’s responsibility is to protect the Constitution, not to champion an individual’s or party’s ideology. Please protect the power of the Judiciary, oppose Judge Gorsuch’s appointment to the Supreme Court, and prove to that you support the rights of ALL citizens.”
